Evaluate the additional operating work and the business problem before deciding that a separate storefront is worthwhile.
Understand the architectural change
Headless commerce separates the public storefront from the commerce backend through supported APIs. That can create flexibility, but it also means more responsibility for frontend hosting, integrations, previews and ongoing maintenance. It is an architecture decision rather than a visual style.
Start with a concrete limitation in the current setup. A catalogue or campaign requirement may be solved by a focused theme improvement, while a genuinely unusual multi-channel workflow may justify a wider investigation.
Count the incremental costs
Compare the proposed architecture with an improved version of the existing store. Include build cost, recurring infrastructure, development support and the effort required from the merchant team. Integrations that used to work inside a theme may need an alternative implementation.
Ask who will own failures across the storefront, commerce APIs and external tools. A project plan should describe monitoring, deployment and a way to recover, not just the happy-path prototype.
Define the benefit you can measure
A return calculation needs an agreed baseline and a way to separate the effect of the rebuild from other changes. Useful measures may include completed customer tasks, publishing effort or a supported commerce workflow. Do not borrow another merchant’s uplift as a forecast for your business.
Record assumptions and the period over which costs and benefits are compared. Faster pages can be helpful, but no architecture automatically guarantees conversion growth or a positive financial return.
Use a staged decision
A small feasibility review can test the hardest requirement before a full commitment. Validate supported APIs, account access, content previews and essential purchase journeys with the actual operating model.
Choose the simpler approach when it meets the requirements. Headless is appropriate only when its flexibility addresses a real need that outweighs the extra work over time.
